Green MEP Welcomes Strong Parliament Warning To France Over Roma Deportations

09 September 2010 – Euro-MPs round on President Sarkozy following widely criticized expulsions of Roma from France to Romania

MEPs sent a strong signal of support to Roma communities and a clear warning to EU governments today when they voted to officially condemn the French deportations of Roma that have hit the headlines in recent weeks.

A toughly worded resolution on the Euro-Parliament’s formal response to the recent expulsions in France was passed – with 337 in favour, 245 against and 51 abstentions. The vote marked a victory for the Greens, who have campaigned vigorously on the issue.

The Euro-Parliament is now calling for an immediate end to the deportations – and continues to demand that the European Commission draw up a cohesive strategy for the EU wide integration of the Roma.

Keith Taylor, the Green Party’s MEP for South East England, said: “The Euro-Parliament has today shown that it is not willing to ignore the blatant persecution of Roma people by the French government. I hope that this strong resolution will act as a deterrent to other EU countries tempted to enforce similar draconian measures against a vulnerable minority.

“The Roma are European citizens, yet some of their most fundamental rights – including freedom of movement within the EU and access to services – have been abused. It’s clear that the actions against them are driven by xenophobia, and represent a flouting of national obligations under international law. MEPs have made it clear that this is unacceptable, and that France should be held to account if it fails to stop the deportations.”

Notes to Editors

There are an estimated 10-12 million Roma people in the EU, representing the largest ethnic minority. Other member states, such as Italy, have also been criticized for their historically poor treatment of the ethnic community. Romania is calling for recognition of Roma human rights and a wider policy of integration.
