Green Euro-MP calls on Kent Council to help local businesses

7 January 2011 – The Green Euro-MP for Tonbridge, Keith Taylor, is calling on Kent County Council to improve shopping conditions in Tonbridge High Street to help recession-hit local businesses. Keith visited the town today to support Tonbridge and Malling Green Party’s calls for action from their local council.

Campaigners are calling for improvements to Tonbridge High Street, including the closure of the High Street to cars and lorries at weekends between 10am and 4pm(1). They have submitted an 800 strong petition to Tonbridge Forum, which was given to Kent County Council by Conservative Cllr Valerie Dagger. Unfortunately, the County Council has responded by indicating it will continue with its existing policies, which are not reducing traffic congestion or air pollution.

Keith Taylor, Green MEP for Kent and the South East, commented: ‘During a time of recession, local shops and businesses need all the help they can get. Improving the retail environment, making Tonbridge High Street more people-friendly is of crucial importance.’

Keith, who served as a local councillor for more than a decade before being elected to the European Parliament, continued: ‘While I was a Brighton & Hove Councillor a pedestrianisation scheme was extended in my ward, after close co-operation with traders. Footfall increased and the pavements are now alive with shoppers. It was a great example of a council working with local traders to improve an area. I do hope that Kent Highways rethink their swift decision, and support local people and the economic vitality of Tonbridge’.
