9 February 2011 - Sussex’s Green Euro-MP Keith Taylor travelled from Brussels to Worthing last week to meet staff and pupils at a local school with a thriving ‘eco-action team’.
On Friday 4 February Keith met members of the ‘eco-action’ team at Thomas A Becket Middle School. He heard about the work they’re doing to save energy and resources in their school, encourage pupils to walk or cycle to school and use fair-trade products. Keith spoke to the 8 to 12 year olds about his work in the European Parliament and shared his thoughts on building a greener future.
Teacher, Polly Wise, and the chair of the pupil’s environmental group then gave Keith a tour of the school, including a visit to the school’s tree nursery which is supported by the charity Earth Restoration Service. On Saturday pupils took trees from the nursery to plant at the Wye and Arun Canal.
Keith said: “It was fantastic to see the work that the children are doing to make their school more eco-friendly. What impressed me was how many hands-on opportunities there are for the pupils to get involved in a wide range of activities covering important issues such as energy, transport and food. I talked to them about the work I do in the European parliament and the children were really able to relate it back to the role that they have in running their school.”
