16 March 2011 – Keith Taylor, the Green MEP for Buckinghamshire and the South East, has vowed to write to Buckinghamshire County Council after visiting the site for the proposed Aylesbury Vale incinerator last Friday.
On Friday Keith met Maggi Campebll Keith, a local resident and campaigner from the ‘Stop Aylesbury Vale Incinerator’ (SAVI) group (right) to offer his support to the campaign. Keith argues that mixed burn incineration is an inefficient and out of date way to get rid of rubbish. He also reiterated the Green party’s view that depending on incineration will undermine efforts to increase recycling in Buckinghamshire. He is now calling on Buckinghamshire County Council to consider using more environmentally benign methods of waste disposal.
Keith said: “The idea of building a larger than needed incinerator in the heart of countryside in North Buckinghamshire miles away from where most household waste is collected is utter madness. Not only that, but burn-it-all measures have now been replaced by new technologies. These are yesterday’s ideas when what are needed are solutions to tomorrow’s challenges.”
He added: “I will be writing to Buckinghamshire County Council asking them to reject the application and urging them to develop new waste disposal plans featuring higher recycling targets. I’d urge all like minded people to do the same.”
