17 April 2011 – Keith has responded to constituents who contacted him about misleading health claims being used to sell baby formula milk. Keith was disappointed that not enough MEPs voted last week to stop controversial health claims being used by companies to sell formula milk. Baby food producers claim that the fatty acid DHA contributes to an infant’s visual development and argue they should be allowed to use this when advertising.
Many MEPs disagree and voted in favour of a resolution that points out that there is no scientific consensus for these health claims, which should be banned.
Despite 328 MEPs voting in favour of a ban the qualified majority of 368 votes was not reached, meaning that the authorisation of the health claims will go ahead.
Keith said after the vote: ‘I feel it is completely irresponsible for inappropriate health claims to be used to sell formula milk. Greens have consistently argued that accurate labelling is crucial to prevent consumers being mislead. Parents and carers should not be misinformed by unproven health claims just so big companies can sell more formula milk.’
