Keith calls for an end to long journeys for horses

12 May 2011 – Keith has joined with World Horse Welfare to call for an end to long journeys for horses travelling to slaughter and horses being transported for fattening. Keith today wrote to the European Commission to call for an immediate journey limit of 12 hours for horse transportation, as a step towards ending the cruel live exports which see horses transported across Europe under poor conditions.

The campaign follows the success of Written Declaration 54, signed by over half all MEPs, which calls for an end to the unnecessary suffering of horses being transported to slaughter across Europe. Greens are delighted that this Declaration was passed, making this the official position of the European Parliament. Keith is committed to working with World Horse Welfare in their follow up work with the Commission and Member State Governments who now need to commit to improving the conditions for animal transportation.
