13 May 2011 - Keith is supporting the ‘Hardest Hit’ campaign, which is organised jointly by the Disability Benefits Consortium and the UK Disabled People’s Council. Keith is deeply concerned by the UK government’s spending cuts to services and benefits for disabled people as he believes that people with a disability are entitled to dignity, equal treatment, independent living and full participation in society. Keith believes that disabled people should have free access to the support they need.
The government cuts that have been introduced are widening inequalities and sweeping away the safety net for vulnerable people in Britain . Cuts to pensions and disability, housing and child benefits, as well as rising unemployment, are affecting many disabled people’s livelihoods. Keith believes that the cuts are morally wrong and has been fighting alongside his Green colleague in the British parliament, Caroline Lucas MP, to protest against them.
Green MP Caroline Lucas was among the many MPs present on the march last week, the largest march by disabled people in living memory. Caroline discussed issues with the campaigners such as DLA, housing benefits, and support in the workplace. Keith will continue to work to raise disability rights issues at a European level and will do all he to promote the welfare of people with a disability to ensure their full participation in society.
