5 July 2011 – Keith Taylor, the Green MEP for Kent and South East England has today submitted a statement to the public enquiry (1) into the proposed expansion of Lydd airport. In it he expressed his opposition to the plans and highlighted his concerns over the impact of a larger airport on the environment, the economy and the quality of life for local residents.
Following recent events in Fukushima, Keith’s statement also emphasised his serious concerns over the close proximity of Lydd airport to the Dungeness nuclear power station and warned of a possible nuclear accident if plans are allowed to proceed.
Keith Taylor said “The proposed expansion would see far larger and heavier planes flying over the nuclear power station on a regular basis. If one were to crash the consequences could be devastating. This is not a risk worth taking”.
In his statement Keith also stressed the adverse effects that a larger airport could have on Lydd’s rich and diverse habitat which is home to several rare species.
Keith also drew attention to the negative impact the expansion may have on the health and wellbeing of local residents because of greater road congestion and air and noise pollution. Keith’s statement contradicts claims that the larger airport will be beneficial to the local economy. He highlights the recent poor economic performance of the nearby Manston airport and the negative impact that an expansion will have on tourism.
Keith said: “Dungeness’ unique wildlife habitat is an important attraction for visitors. The airport expansion plans could seriously jeopardise the potential for sustainable tourism, which would have a far more positive impact on the local economy”.
Under EU legislation, Lydd airport must prove that its expansion will not harm any protected wildlife sites. If permission is given to proceed with expansion at Lydd Keith has vowed to take up this case with the European Commission to ensure compliance with EU laws.
