11 October 2011 - Keith co-hosted a lunch event on dementia today in the European Parliament, the objective of which was to highlight to European policy makers and key healthcare stakeholders the findings of the latest report from the UK’s All-Parliamentary Party Group (APPG) on Dementia, which examines care services for people with dementia and their carers. The report puts a cost of €105bn for dementia care services across the EU (€20bn in the UK). Because there is an ageing population, the incidence of dementia is set to increase.
Baroness Sally Greengross, Chair of the APPG, and Louise Lakey, Policy Manager with the Alzheimer’s Society, spoke about the findings of the report. They also explained the report’s recommendations, which include increasing early diagnosis, better home care services and improved working between the health and social care sectors.
Keith, a member of the European Alzheimer’s Alliance, welcomed the event as a valuable opportunity to share best practice and knowledge at EU level on this crucial issue.
