Keith Taylor, Green MEP for the South East, has responded to the Supreme Court ruling that the Government does not have the power to trigger Article 50 without a vote in Parliament.
“I welcome this latest ruling which reaffirms the sovereignty of Parliament. The decision makes clear that Ministers cannot exercise powers which have not been bestowed upon them by the British public and must, instead, consult MPs before triggering Article 50.”
“I join legal experts in urging Theresa May not to try and force Parliament’s hand by drawing up a very short Article 50 bill which would seek to frustrate the proper democratic process and limit MPs ability to debate the Government’s Brexit plans.”
“As a Green, I will continue resisting an extreme Brexit that will cast Britain away from Europe as a tax-haven floating on the edge of the Atlantic. I will work to safeguard hard-won workers’ rights and environmental protections, defend the principle of free movement and our membership of the single market and fight to ensure that the British people also have their say on the final Brexit deal.”
