Keith Taylor, MEP for the South East, is welcoming Wealden District Council’s approval for the construction of a community-owned 4MW solar farm in Berwick.
Mr. Taylor, who had previously expressed his support for the project in a letter to the council, said:
“I am delighted Wealden District Council has approved this fantastic project. Cuckmere Community Solar must be commended for their efforts to ensure the installation of their proposed solar array will safeguard the site’s biodiversity while, at the same time, being sensitive to the concerns of some locals about the visual impact of the project.”
“This fantastic scheme is set to generate enough electricity to power thousands of homes. The community ownership model will improve the region’s energy security and help combat fuel poverty by reducing the reliance on the big six energy companies who control energy prices. It will also create local jobs and ensure any profits are invested locally.”
“Ultimately, the plans will put local people at the heart of producing the clean energy we so desperately need. It is just the latest example of the dedication shown by communities across the South East that are pursuing the necessary transition to renewable energy and reducing Britain’s destructive reliance on fossil fuels.”
