Keith Taylor, Green Party MEP for the South East, has responded to an Unearthed and Guardian exclusive report which reveals UK government plans to relax the earthquake rules related to fracking, just one day after the publication of the IPCC climate report on the importance of keeping global warming levels below 1.5c.
Commenting on the revelations, the senior Green politician, who yesterday launched a briefing to help people to oppose the government's fast-track fracking plans, said:
"On Monday, climate scientists from across the globe pleaded with world leaders to take unprecedented action to divest from fossil fuels and decarbonise their economies to avert the very worst effects of a climate breakdown that is already in progress."
"It should have been a political earthquake, the report's findings were so stark and powerful they should have shaken the walls of Westminster into urgent action. Instead, it is revealed that a Conservative government intent on bypassing local democracy to fast-track fracking also plans to relax the rules and regulations on the literal earthquakes linked to shale gas operations."
"At the same time, fracking protesters, those who have heeded the warnings of climate scientists, are being jailed in Britain for peacefully protecting our planet. Any government that conspires with the filthy fossil fuel industry against its own people is rotten to the core. Britain under the Tories is a genuinely terrifying place. The ignorance of evidence and the pursuit of climate-destructive policies at any cost imperils any future we hope to build for the generations to come. History will not judge the Tories kindly."
